NoFizzCLT: Jason’s Story

We are honored to have Jason Yarborough share with us his NoFizzCLT journey – and on video, to boot! Jason does a ton of work in the city of Charlotte, and is very well-connected, so we were extremely honored to be able to sit down with him for a minute to talk soda!

As an aside, Jason and his colleagues have invited us to be the fitness writing staff for CLTBuzz – an honor we accepted, of course! We’ll keep you posted on our articles and content over there – be sure to visit their site, and follow what they’re doing for Charlotte!

In the meantime, check out his story below, and while you’re at it, please subscribe to our YouTube channel here – we’d love to connect with you on YouTube, too!

I found out about NoFizzCLT on Twitter. I saw a few people retweeting this “NoFizzCLT” thing and it was kind of a clever name, so I thought, you know, what’s that all about? So, I looked into it, and I saw a big health and wellness guy in town and a few people I really respect were saying some things about it. That’s really how I found out about that, and yourself, and the whole thing that encompasses it.

I have only had one soda since [the start of the challenge] – I won’t lie. Coming from my background, I’ve been in the health and wellness industry for quite some time now, so I’m really keen on my own health, I’m really up on that. I wasn’t drinking a ton of sodas, but what I noticed through the challenge that in the few times I do drink sodas, there was often an unhealthy meal accompanying it. So, since I cut out the soda part of the equation, there’s nothing there – you’ve got no meal if you’ve got no soda, so therefore, you’re challenging yourself to only eat healthy, which is what I saw as the biggest part of that.

If you’re starting the challenge tomorrow, stick with it. It might be tough for some people at first, you will probably go through a little detox phase. There might be some headaches from the lack of caffeine, but stick with it, and find other fluids to replace with it, whether it’s an electrolyte replenisher, or just a ton of water. Focus on your own health, because the studies NoFizz Charlotte showed us about soda, and all the unhealthy factors of high fructose corn syrup and all the sugars in there, those are the number one causes to your health and obesity.

The research challenges you every day to see something new, and just think about not having that one soda. Growing up, I grew up with my dad and brother, so we grew up on soda, pizzas, and chips – we are a bunch of boys! It seems, when you grow up like that, you’re always craving junk food. So when I saw those facts that NoFizz Charlotte showed me, it reminds me that I didn’t need that soda, because of what it was going to do to my body – my insides, or my bones, or my brains, or whatever it is!

My alternative drink of choice was typically water. I also drink a lot of electrolyte replenishers, like Ultima – it’s kind of like a natural Gatorade. I find that helps with natural hydration as well, and gives me that sweet flavor I am looking for.

[When asked about the next challenge to avoid soda] Another 30-day challenge? I’m in, man. Let’s do it!

NoFizzCLT: Amy’s Story

Today, we are bringing you yet another NoFizz Charlotte success story! This one comes to us from Amy Crane, the owner of Bella Ropa Boutique in Birkdale Village. Amy discusses how, even though she didn’t really have a soda dependence going into the challenge, NoFizzCLT allowed her to completely focus on cutting out that occasional soda indulgence she had, and made her realize how important water is to her body.

Enjoy her story below – and while you’re at it, please support Bella Ropa, in the heart of Birkdale Village! Visit the Website, Facebook, and Twitter accounts for Bella Ropa Boutique when you get a chance!

Amy, her mother, and her wonderful dog Jerry ran with us at the PetPalooza 5k last month!

The buzz generated on Twitter around NoFizzCLT piqued my curiosity. I admit that I’m not a heavy soda drinker, but I wondered if I would be up to the challenge of a soda-free life. I don’t need a jolt of caffeine first thing in the morning to get me started, but there are some things that just go with an ice cold Coke. Pizza, burger and fries are at the top of the list. Water just doesn’t seem to go as well.

While I grew up in a house with a chronic Coke drinker (Mom, I’m looking at you) I rarely drink more than one soda in a day. In fact, I can barely finish a 12-ounce can.

Since I made the commitment to NoFizzCLT, it appears to have had the opposite effect on me! I have found myself craving a Coke or even a Mountain Dew. It has became the forbidden fruit – kind of like drinking under age. I woke up one morning with a serious craving for a Coke, and all I could think about was an ice, cold, real coke. I really had to tap into some willpower to resist collapsing into the urge for soda! I didn’t do it. I drank water instead, and even though I wasn’t happy about it, I did it.

I also noticed it had become a habit, more than anything, to just order a Coke while eating at restaurants. Ordering water just doesn’t seem as exciting. It wasn’t that I really wanted a Coke, I just didn’t want to order water.

It would have been easy to cheat. Who would know? So I checked the updates on Twitter and saw what everyone else was saying. I wasn’t alone. Other people were discussing their cravings and offering suggestions and sharing what they were doing to overcome the desire to drink soda. It made me realize that this isn’t just for 30 days – it’s going to stick.

Honestly, I knew all along how bad soda is for you. And I knew that diet soda can be even worse than regular. I try to eat healthy and take care of myself so this is just another stepping stone to becoming a healthier, more informed person. Knowing that other people were committed to giving up soda actually made it fun. It’s also taught me the importance of moderation. It’s ok to have a coke one night with pizza if I absolutely have to have it. But for the most part, I think I will stick with water!

Next time you're in Birkdale Village, stop by Bella Ropa Boutique and say hello to Amy!

Testimonial: Tina Whittaker

Tina Whittaker, the owner of Tina E. Imaging, has been one of our great clients for several weeks. Tina is a personal stylist and image consultant in Charlotte; you can visit her website here. You can also find her on Twitter. She was kind enough to write us a great testimonial this week, and we wanted to share it with you here. Enjoy!

After about 6 weeks of training with FusionSouth, not only have I dropped more than 3 body fat percentage points, but I have also improved my self-confidence. I wasn’t sure how much my self-confidence could be improved but I surprised myself to find there is always room for more! In all seriousness, this week I wanted to give a testimony to any of you who are struggling to reach your fitness goals.

This testimony begins as I was nearly at the end of a regularly scheduled workout with FusionSouth. I was tired. It was Monday. I felt I couldn’t continue. So I quit.  Yes, I gave up. Not my proudest moment, and not something I am eager to share with the world.  In all actuality the sting of quitting was much harder than the actual sting of doing that last set of lunges, squats, and jumping jacks! But I think it is imperative that I share my entire journey – and not just the positive results.

I didn’t give up for long.  The next day I continued in my quest for physical fitness and I worked out with FusionSouth again. I worked out even harder than I did before, and I will continue to push my limits!  Life’s challenges will knock you down sometimes, but what matters is that you get back up and try again. I am determined to get back up for every single workout session, and complete each workout to the best of my ability! I am glad that FusionSouth was there to help pick me back up and encourage me to continue to work hard. I hope this testimonial about determination helps others to continue on their journey to fitness and work harder than before!

The Benefits Of An In-Home Fitness Program

Thursday, May 27th, 2010

Share |

Many health nuts swear on the effectiveness of going to the gym regularly, but a lot of people are still reluctant to go to a public fitness center for a variety of reasons. It is possible to have a successful, effective, challenging, and safe in-home fitness program using as much (or as little!) equipment as you like.

There are plenty of effective exercises that you can do within the comfort of your home! In-home fitness programs certainly have advantages as well as limitations, and it may be helpful for you to understand them before you choose to do your workouts at home.

The Advantages
In all sorts of ways, an in-home fitness program has more to offer than a gym membership. For one, it is usually cheaper to buy your own exercise equipment rather than spend money on a gym membership that you will probably end up not using after a short time. Also, with your own exercise equipment at home, you do not have to worry about sharing equipment with other people. With that, you don’t need to worry about germs with our own exercise equipment, either!

Aside from not having to share your exercise equipment and tools, you can be sure that your machines are in great shape. Many fitness clubs are known for not maintaining machines quite as regularly as they should, in order to cut back on expenses and make a little bigger profit. When you are at home using and maintaining your own equipment and machines, you can monitor the safety, cleanliness, and working order as often as you want.

More often than not, it is also more convenient to work out at home. You are guaranteed some privacy, so you do not have to be self-conscious about other people staring at your flesh (in either derision, or admiration). You also get to save on time because you do not have to drive to a gym just to get your workout done.

The Disadvantages
Unfortunately, there are also some disadvantages to doing a home fitness program. In a home fitness program (as is the case with any fitness program), you have to rely greatly on your own self-discipline to complete your workout. If you do not exert yourself, you will not get your routines completed, and you will not achieve your fitness goals.

It can also be hard to get support and get motivated when you are working out at home. People living with you at home may not understand your need to exercise, or be an obstacle to your fitness goals. Talk to your family, roommates, and loved ones about the need for you to be healthy, fit, and active – you will probably find that they will gladly support you!

Aside from that, there are many distractions at home that can take your attention away from your workout routines, such as chores, the demands of your family, the TV set, or anything more pressing at the time. Before you realize it, your time gets taken up by something other than exercising.

Space can also be a challenge to setting up a home fitness routine. You may not have enough floor space in your house to put your exercise equipment. It is possible that there simply is not enough room for you to get your workout done at home – though that is rare for most people.

You can make any exercise program work if you have the discipline and the motivation to achieve your fitness goals, whether you use a gym membership program or work out at home. If you choose to workout at home, there are plenty of safe, effective ways to do so – and if you have the self-discipline to follow through with the commitment, you will be proud of the results, with a little more time and money to boot!

NoFizzCLT: Looking Ahead…

Monday, May 24th, 2010

Share |

For those of you participating, NoFizzCLT is finally over… in fact, it ended at midnight on the night of May 22nd. The biggest question we have been getting from participants is pretty obvious – what’s in store next? Today, we’re going to answer that – there are a couple of cool things in store for NoFizzCLT!

…The Challenge Continues
We’re not stopping at 30 days! Now that so many of you have been successful with 30 days free of soda, we’re going to continue to challenge you guys to give up soda whenever possible. Sure, you can enjoy a soda as a reward every now and then, but we challenge you to take what you’ve learned this month and apply it to your life in the long-term. Avoid soda at picnics. Seek out alternatives at restaurants. Know the right things to purchase at the grocery store.

Most of all, understand what soda (and all of its associated processed ingredients) does to the human body – and why you should avoid it and seek out healthy alternatives. We honestly hope that the long-term benefit of NoFizzCLT is that participants, and their friends and families, are more educated, aware, and thoughtful when it comes to soft drink consumption!

…The Information Continues
One of the best, and most well-received, parts of NoFizzCLT was the information we put forth on our Twitter and Facebook pages… that’s not going anywhere! We are going to continue to highlight medical research, health and fitness articles, weight loss resources, and more websites, publications, journals, and interviews about the dangers of soda, high fructose corn syrup, and aspartame.

Education is half the battle. If we can change one person’s mind about soft drinks by providing them with quality education and information, then we’ve done our job! We will continue highlighting research on the danger of soft drinks in the hopes of showing our blog readers, Twitter followers, Facebook fans, and those surrounding, that there are healthier alternatives to soda!

…The Support Continues
Another great part of NoFizzCLT, according to our enthusiastic participants, was the open forum of discussion and support that became our Facebook and Twitter outlets. Tweet us! Facebook us! We love answering questions, hearing success stories, interacting with participants (both new and original!) and more. Try us – we love supporting those in Charlotte and beyond!

…The Foundation Begins
As we have spoken about to some of our participants, we are in the process of creating a non-profit organization dedicated to raising awareness about the dangers of soft drink consumption. While the organizations is in its infancy, and there are plenty of directions to go, we are planning on mainly educating families and children about the dangers of soda, how to avoid it at school, better cost-effective things to purchase at the store, reasons for avoiding soft drinks for young athletes and students, and more.

We have so many ideas of where to take the organization, and we are excited to be in the midst of the website design process (among other business-related ventures for NoFizzCLT). And with that, we’d love to hear your feedback; what should we do? Whom should we advocate for? Where should we take NoFizzCLT? Which populations are particularly vulnerable? E-mail us here with feedback, suggestions, resources, and more – this is an organization for the Charlotte community, and we want you to be an interactive and vocal part of NoFizzCLT in the future!

To conclude, we are not done with NoFizzCLT. In fact, we are really just beginning! We’re excited to see where this will take us, you, and Charlotte – and we want you to be involved. Keep letting us know how you’re doing with soda consumption. Keep asking us about questions, alternatives, research studies, and more – and keep us posted on your progress!

NoFizzCLT: Ken’s Story

Friday, May 7th, 2010

Share |

In today’s personal testimony for our NoFizzCLT initiative, Ken Buck recounts his story of giving up soda as part of a vast change in his overall diet. Ken has done extremely well with NoFizzCLT, and we are really glad that he has taken on the challenge wholeheartedly!

Ken, we expect you to continue your journey well beyond May 22nd, and we want to hear about your progress after that date, too! Enjoy his words below!
_________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Why did you decide to take on the NoFizzCLT challenge?
The “No FizzCLT” Challenge came about just as I was undertaking a vast change in my overall diet, a change that initially did not cover eliminating diet sodas. After learning, however, about the dangers of sodas – and diet sodas in particular – I decided to include eliminating soda as well.

What are your impressions of how technology and social media played into NoFizzCLT?
Social media has provided the support system that one usually only gets with typical “12-step” program meetings for overcoming something. It allows for sharing the good, the bad, and the ugly of the challenge.

What was the toughest thing about giving up soda?
Quite honestly, I think I am an anomaly because I’ve really not encountered any hardships in giving up soda. Only once did having a soda even cross my mind and, for me at least, it was quite easy to remind myself to make a healthier choice.

What was the best thing about giving up soda?
I feel better! Instead of the ups and downs of caffeine-driven sodas, my energy level is much more even throughout the day.

How did FusionSouth help you along the way on the NoFizzCLT journey?
FusionSouth has been an indispensable source of encouragement, support, and perhaps most importantly, a source of information about the how’s and why’s for giving up soda.

NoFizzCLT: Dean’s Story

Thursday, May 6th, 2010

Share |

Just as we did the last couple of articles, part of our NoFizzCLT Initiative includes personal testimonies by local Charlotte residents about their journey to give up soda, aspartame, and high fructose corn syrup.

Today, Dean Bauguss was kind enough to share his story of giving up soda – a sacrifice he began to think about after his father experience some health issues, himself. Dean is a partner in Bauguss & Bauguss, a graphic design firm that he owns and operates with his younger sister.

Thank you for sharing your journey with us, Dean – we truly appreciate it! We are amazed at your commitment to getting completely away from carbonated beverages, high fructose corn syrup, and processed food! Please enjoy his words below!
_________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Taking on the NoFizzCLT challenge was an easy decision for me. My father recently had quadruple bypass surgery after suffering a mild heart attack. He wasn’t overweight, he didn’t eat terribly badly, he doesn’t drink or smoke, and he has played golf once a week religiously for more than 20 years. His health problems in spite of all of that really made me open my eyes and take a look at my own nutritional habits.

Growing up I had always assumed if you were going to drink a soda, it should be a diet one. I developed a craving for Diet Coke and was known to have several every day. I wasn’t aware of how unhealthy they were for me – which is odd considering the amount of information you can find online if you just do a little research. Since giving up soda I seem to sleep better at night, I have more energy throughout the day and I have been inspired to eat as healthy as possible. After all, why stop at just soda, right Bobby?!

I was really surprised at how quickly the NoFizzCLT challenge spread across Twitter. Within a matter of minutes a large number of people were not only talking about it but accepting the challenge as well. The #NoFizzCLT hashtag seemed to be everywhere!

FusionSouth has been a great source of knowledge for NoFizzCLT. Information on the effects of high fructose corn syrup, carbonated beverages and more can now be seen in one easy to find place on the web! They’ve also been great at suggesting a bunch of healthy alternatives for those of us that get tired of only drinking plain water each day.

I hope to continue with NoFizzCLT well beyond the challenge period, and help raise awareness on the dangers of soda, so others can become as healthy as possible!!!
